One day we decided to make a spontaneous day trip to Macau and took the ferry from Kowloon (took about an hour). Macau is probably the craziest place I've ever been to. It is the Las Vegas of Asia with the world's biggest Casino, the Venetian. Of course we had to check it out (we didn't gamble though). The interiors and exteriors of the building complex were exquisite and built to resemble European architecture. I almost couldn't believe my eyes, they had a shopping mall made to look like Venice. They even had canals built inside with gondolas and everything. So hyperreal! Plus there was also an Eiffel Tower. Well I guess if you live in Asia and don't have enough money to go to Europe, this is the place to be...
Where Hong Kong was a former British colony, Macau was administrated by the Portuguese. The Portuguese influence is still very much present there. The historic centre has an interesting blend of Chinese and European architecture. We even ate at a Portuguese restaurant there! It was quite surreal seeing these buildings that could easily be found in Portugal. I had to remind myself sometimes that we were actually in China. Macau turned out to be even more crowded than Hong Kong. It was so difficult to get around because I felt like I was at a concert or something! Way too many people..... And last but not least, we had to go see the pandas! They were super cute <3
